Warren Zevon - I Need a Truck

It’s feeling apt for now. RIP, Mr. Z. It depresses me that I never got to see you live. A short and great track from one of the greatest albums of all time.

Note: This track was an outtake only issued on the 2007 remastered release of Excitable Boy.

Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros - Home

It’s my understanding this song is getting lots of radio play…

Don’t care. Kind of fits with the recent relocation back to California, and why I’ve been so damned mopey. Only thing that’s lacking is “You”…whoever the hell “You” are.

Off to a tech company group interview. Determined to demonstrate some Hitler-esque leadership skills.

65daysofstatic - Tiger Girl

It’s been awhile.

65dos is releasing their new album in a few days (‘We Were Exploding Anyway’). This is the last track off of the disc…very Fuck Buttons, but better. They’re definitely making a departure from their post-rock roots, but it’s not a bad move in the least. It’s tasty, I promise.

Agnostic Front - Gotta Go

I’m feeling nostalgic. Agnostic Front takes me back to 15 years old with liberty spiked hair and belts covered in metal. Owing to my love of hardcore punk, I avoid anything they made beyond the late 90s (reformed after a breakup and took on more of a Hatebreed-esque sound), but the early stuff is quintessential American hardcore punk.

I feel like I need to race a crit to this song.

Murder by Death - King of the Gutters, Prince of the Dogs

Oh, Adam Turla, Mr. Amazing-Frontman-Of-Murder-by-Death. A man crush on you, I do have. Nothing like almost dying in a day (getting run off the road at 80MPH in a tiny German sports car is usually a recipe for instant destruction) to set the mood for an MBD song that crescendos nicely. Off their newest release, ‘Good Morning, Magpie’. Technically not out until the 6th - I picked up the limited edition vinyl last night (oh yes, hipstering it up).

The first two tracks on the album are devoted to whiskey. Turns out myself and Mr. Turla have the same favorite bourbon - Bulleit. So much win.

Had a couple brief chats with both the cellist (Sarah) and drummer (Dagan - unwittingly at the bar, he asked me who I was shooting for). Incredibly chill people, and one of my top five groups. Listen. Buy (when it comes out). Love.

Shot from the show last night - Turla performing an encore-encore of “Shiola”, one of my favorite MBD songs (I’ll post up a link to more when we finish editing):

The Low Anthem - Sally Where’d You Get Your Liquor From

Given the shows of the past three days, I’ve been on a Low Anthem/Murder By Death/Caspian tear. This particular track isn’t on any recorded LA albums, but was ripped from a live KRCW set by the band. It’s a cover of an American folk song (I think the origin is the Rev. Gary Davis, but don’t quote me on that), and they performed it live Friday. With the pump organ (from World War I, no less) and harmonica, it’s kind of bone-chilling.

Personally, I like The Low Anthem’s live recordings more than their studio stuff.

I was going to post a whole writeup on how The Low Anthem tonight was incredible, but then Chrome ate it. Life’s a bitch, sometimes. Ah well - enjoy.

Expect a slew of random gushing about awesome bands this month. Salt Lake is getting inundated with some world-class acts in the next few weeks
